Dictator Portraits

Following on from the torn paper portraits, I've been working on this series of portraits of dictators. I've used the same torn paper technique as before with the added challenge of achieving some degree of likeness. Indeed, some are more recognisable than others.

Muammar Gaddafi (Libya)

Adolf Hitler (Germany)

Saddam Hussein (Iraq)

Idi Amin (Uganda)

Mao Zedong (China)

Benito Mussolini (Italy)

Pol Pot (Cambodia)

Joseph Stalin (Soviet Union)

Fidel Castro (Cuba)

Torn-paper portraits

This is a personal project I've been working on lately. It's a little bit inspired by the wonderful abstract paper portraits of Alexandros Vasmoulakis and a little bit inspired by the Little White Lies "Shame" cover by Paul Willoughby. My approach isn't quite as subtle as the former nor as graphic as the latter but somewhere in between. My aim with these portraits is to achieve an impression similar to that of early portrait photography. I'm enjoying the technique and have been developing a series which I'll post when it's a bit further along.
